People spend a lot more time outdoors when they are camping and hopefully they take advantage of the local, seasonal fruits & veggies, too. We’re proud of our abundance of farm markets and orchards and we know you’ll enjoy whatever is in season during the time you’re camping with us. In case you’d like to know what will be ripe during your next stay, we’re listing some of the most popular items below.
If you’re camping in May you can plenty of delicious greens to experiment with. There are collard greens, Swiss chard, kale, bok choy, lettuce, and watercress, for starters. You might still be able to catch some winter squash during this month, depending on the weather. There will be plenty of asparagus, radishes, rhubarb, mushrooms, and potatoes to choose from. It’s a good time to be camping due to reduced crowds and a great time to find some tasty veggies for dinner.
June, July, and August provide a bumper crop of choices. You’ll find the fruits are getting fat and juicy. Apples, blackberries, grapes, honeydew, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and watermelon all fill the air with their fragrance and stain your fingers with their sweet, delicious juice. There are still plenty of greens to be found with the addition of broccoli. We begin seeing new additions such as bell peppers, Brussel sprouts, eggplant, peas, potatoes, cabbage, cukes, radishes, and summer squash.
September and October keep us provided with many of the fruits we had through the summer such as apples, raspberries, watermelon, grapes, and cantaloupe. The greens are still growing and readily available. Now we begin to see more winter squash and pumpkins. It’s a festive time of year and the orchards are warm and welcoming. You can try your hand at a corn maze or just enjoy some cider and donuts while pumpkin shopping. You can find out more at Minnesota Grown – What’s In Season?
