Disk Golf is an outdoor sport in which players throw a flying disc at a basket made of chains. The disks are smaller and heavier than traditional disks. They have been customized for flight speed, accuracy, and control. They fall into three categories for the game, depending on how you want to play; putters, mid-range, and drivers.
Putters are similar to the Frisbees we use to play catch. and mid-range discs are somewhat sharper on the edge so they can cut through the air more efficiently. Drivers have a sharp, beveled edge and can be further divided into categories of distance, maximum distance, etc. These require more skill in throwing so most players work up to this by beginning with putters and mid-range.
There are plenty of throwing styles to use such as backhand, forehand, hatchet, thumber, roller, and chicken wing. Once you begin playing, these throws will become fun challenges for you to master.
Disc Golf can be played with friends or you can join tournaments. It’s popularity continues to grow and, though it has been in existance for many years, its numbers have grown rapidly in the last 7 or 8 years. People say they love Disc Golf over just throwing a Frisbee because of the control skill required to play the game well. And when comparing it to golf you speak of feet instead of yards.
If you haven’t played yet or if you play and would like a place to challenge your friends, check out our parks in Austin. Good luck!
